Back after a little break

Hey everyone, long time no see.

I’ve been a bit quiet lately, but all good — I just needed a little break.

I’m currently moving some of my notes to the Journal app. Everything related to reflection and only relevant to me belongs there now.

What do you think about the Journal app? How are you doing? 🙏

Jerome Koehler

Welcome back! Personally, I am doing well. Hope things are going well with you, too. I really need to utilize the Journal app more often!

Chris Plonski

Thanks so much, Jerome Koehler 🙏
Really appreciate it. Glad to hear you’re doing well too. And yes, the Journal app is one of those tools that’s easy to overlook at first, but it can become pretty lovely once it clicks.

Rainer Oszcipok

I never used the journal app. But in your screenshot i saw interesting folders. How do you use and structure this app?

Chris Plonski

Rainer Oszcipok its simple. I use "Journal" as my inbox and sort later. I recently started with folders but to sum current state up:

  • Goals: My yearly goals - I update the entry biweekly per year
(I have also one entry for longterm goals)
  • Books: Some reflections on the books I read + rating (inkl. link to Apple Books)
  • Hikes: Apple Fitness Workouts "Hikes" plus all the images I made at the hike - some reflections as well
  • Workouts: All the important Apple Fitness Workouts (first time, progress, personal bests ...)

Hope this helps. ✌️

Rainer Oszcipok

Great. Gives me a lot of inspiration 💡

Mauricio Muñoz

I’ve recently started to use the Journal app to blog my stay and experiences in Spain. I’m about 10 entries in and the more I use it, the easier it becomes to integrate it into my daily life. So far I’m loving it!

Chris Plonski

Mauricio Muñoz this sounds awesome! Have fun in Spain! 😎
Happy to hear more about your experience with the journal app in the long run.

Oscar Torres

I briefly tested the Journal app when it came out in 2023, and wrote a few entries. I quickly dismissed it as a place for this kind of thoughts, because I value data ownership above anything else for this category.

Despite how well integrated and tempting 😅 it may be, I prefer journaling in plain text as I’m almost certain I will be able to read that in 5, 10 or even more years from now. Just the thought of loosing or not being able to access my journals in the future disqualifies this app in my system. It’s also even simpler, just plain text. The downside it’s that is not that well integrated with other Apple things like Workout and Photos, and other data points like location. If a good export functionality is added, I may consider it again.

It’s funny I bring up data ownership, because I just downloaded Journal again now in iOS, and my entries from 2023 are not there. I was expecting to find one or two entries I put in there when I initially tested the app, but I see nothing. Does this happened to someone else?

Chris Plonski

@Oscar I understand this. For me the integration wins. But hopefully the export will be a thing.

I had no problems with missing entries over the years. Mhm. 🤔

Oscar Torres

Chris Plonski Update, opened the app just now and the entries that were missing appeared, it seems that the sync was very, very slow 😅

Oscar Torres

I now also see they they have an Export option inside of a specific journal, after a quick look seems like a good export functionality! 👌🏼

Chris Plonski

@Oscar uh nice! Yeah based on device it needs some time. Especially the Mac App.

Chris Plonski

@Oscar Great! Have you tested it already?

Oscar Torres

Chris Plonski tested it! Even added an entry for a "real testing" haha. It's great, honestly. The integration with Photos, location, Workout, etc. it's really good. It has other pros over plain text journaling in Obsidian, for example the schedule and notifications you can configure for journaling reminders it's a nice to have.

Chris Plonski

Oscar T. nice! Yeah the suggestions are a big win for me. Even when I’m lazy, I can quickly capture something. 😎

Andrew Mugford

I don't know why this never occurred to me, but thanks for the "push". I've come up with this, so far.

Andrew Mugford this looks great! I feel you. For me it‘s always the same. I see someone using a tool different and my whole world opens again. 😂

Chris Plonski

Andrew Mugford uhhh…I will steal the mountain icon idea! 😎
